Durkan to lead Thamesmead Towers refurbishment

Peabody has appointed Durkan to refurbish nine 13-storey tower blocks in Thamesmead as part of the wider regeneration of the area.  The contract, worth £4.5m, is the second Thamesmead contract that Durkan has won to date.

Situated on the Parkview Estate in Thamesmead, the nine towers comprise a total of 432 apartments.  Residents will remain in situ during the works which include:

  • the removal of 2160 single-glazed steel windows and the installation of new double-glazed UPVC windows and balcony doors, improving energy efficiency and ventilation and reducing noise pollution
  • improvements and repairs to external concrete facades and
  • supply and installation of new kitchen and bathroom extraction fans, reducing condensation and improving air quality

Jim Briggs, Managing Director, Durkan said "We're delighted to have been appointed by Peabody for a second time and to be able to play our part in improving living environments for the Thamesmead community.  We have a strong history in delivering refurbishment projects of this kind and will be drawing on this experience to employ the highest standards of resident liaison and welfare throughout."

John Lewis, Executive Director Thamesmead, Peabody said "The regeneration of Thamesmead will involve the development of thousands of new homes but it is equally important to improve homes for existing residents.  The refurbishment of the Thamesmead Towers is logistically challenging with residents remaining in situ throughout.  Durkan has an excellent track record in this type of work and has demonstrated full commitment to both quality and resident safety and satisfaction as part of its bid."

Durkan will employ mast climbers rather than scaffolding for the works in order to reduce disruption to residents and improve delivery timescales.

Works are expected to complete in December 2019.
